A garniture that still keeps time

French Sèvres & Ormolu Clock Garniture, 3 Pieces

A Napoléon III garniture in gilt-bronze and céleste-blue Sèvres porcelain. Its dial, painted with a swallow in flight among scattered flowers, has measured the hours of a French salon for more than a century and a half.

It survives complete, with its original winding key, and it still keeps time. Acquired from Sotheby's, it is offered now as a single, intact ensemble: clock and matched side pieces, as they were always meant to stand.

Cobalt, gold, and a gallant scene

Sèvres Porcelain Covered Vase, France, 1871

A deep cobalt vase, hand-painted with a gallant scene in the eighteenth-century taste and framed by gilt-bronze maiden handles. Every detail is the work of a patient hand, finished in burnished gold.

This is the kind of decorative art that once furnished the great salons of nineteenth-century France: made to be lived with, lit by candlelight, and passed down. A century and a half later, it has lost none of its presence.
